What's New?

First of all, you’ll notice our name change: We’ll tell you more about that in the next newsletter. The important thing to know is that our goal of creating Nature Towns remains unchanged, and we are making progress!

As you might imagine, building a new town - even a small one - is no mean feat, even for experienced developers. Our life and professional experiences include a lot of things, but we don’t quite fit into that category. We realized a few months back that the first step on the path toward Nature Towns could be a farm that is owned and managed by a community, just as a Town will be. And so the idea for Nature Farms was born.

Don’t get me wrong: when I say “managed by the community,” I don’t mean that if you’re one of the community owners, you’ll need to give up your day job. Just as in Nature Towns, a Nature Farm will be operated day-to-day by a professional steward and the employees. But the community members who jointly own the farm will elect representatives from among their number (which means you could be on the board of directors) to hire a master steward / management company to operate the farm.

We developed the concept of Nature Towns for many reasons, one of which is the fact that most places in the United States today are not particularly resilient. We are dependent on polluting fossil fuels, food that mostly comes from far-away places, clothing that mostly comes from far-away places, and … well, you get the picture. Global supply chain breakdowns during COVID showed us that the system is a lot less resilient than we would like. And the price of eggs today shows just how fragile our food system really is.
